HERB FILLMORE

Herbert Peter Fillmore
1-22-1924 – 10-27-1999

The paintings and graphics of Herb Fillmore are truly indicative of the "Sophisticated Naif" style of which he renders his historical works today. They are historical in the sense that the artist spent painstaking hours in researching the subjects of his interest; and later transposing the culmination of these interests onto an art board. With the detail and patience of an illustrator, Herb Fillmore brought back to life scenes of America that have all but been forgotten in this world of modernized machines, and fashions.

With colorfully clad people scurrying down Main Street, bicyclists, ice cream vendors, and children from the turn of the century, all come to life in a myriad of calculated strokes, transferring the thoughts of the artist into a magical reality.

Mr. Fillmore studied at the Chouinard Institute of Art and graduated at the top of his class. His early career started after a four-year term in the military. He was a technical illustrator at Lockheed, which gave him a true education in detailed drawing and scaled illustration. After leaving a prominent position at Lockheed, Herb went to work at several major art studios in Los Angeles, as a commercial illustrator. Having completed several major works, Mr. Fillmore then become a freelance commercial illustrator. He worked as a free-lance illustrator in Los Angeles for over forty-five years and in such a highly competitive field, that alone is an accomplishment.

Herb Fillmore began to polish and refine his work in primitives with authenticity a prime concern and he spent countless hours in their final execution. His paintings are found in esteemed collections all over the world and he has exhibited in numerous galleries.

We are genuinely lucky that in a lifetime of an ever-abstracting world there was an artist like Herb Fillmore to remind us that it was different way back when.
